It is obviously some kind of blight, such as one might find afflicting various non-organic kinds of produce seduced by the dark side of the farm.

Sunlight. Just plain sunlight. That's all.

Sorry, that was me. I had to do some research to find out the answer, then I decided that might not be fair. I hope I didn't spoil it for anyone.

I'm going to say either sunspots, Walmart film development, or an ash cloud from an exploding volcano.

It seems like they are covered in something...maybe some kind of insect. If that's sunlight, I'm a monkey's uncle. My vote's with the bugs.

I did some research I don't know if that is cheating but I did it anyway and I think windmilltilter deserves the dollar because he is right. Unless he has to be more specific and say what species of bug in which case; Danaus plexippus .

The first person actually was MM, who got it about 10 minutes after I posted the contest. However, she doesn't blog, so she gets my love but no dollar. Sapientiae Amator and Ladybird both gave the full answer, SA first of course, but they are disqualified for letting their desire to be right inhibit their creativity. Therefore, Windmilltiller gets the prize.
